Hypothetical trade
« on: Thursday April 13, 2023, 07:12:42 AM Eastern »
Suppose the following happens:

(1)  The Caps somehow win the lottery, giving them the rights to draft this year's generational talent in what is supposed to be a deep draft pool;

(2)  St. Louis comes to the Caps with the following offer:  We have the 11th, 24th, and 29th selections in this year's draft.  We'll trade all 3 of them to you for the #1 pick.

Do you do it?

Yea, I’d pass on that trade. It’s rare that a #1 pick really turns into a superstar, especially in their first season or two where this squad will need the most help, and one guy isn’t going to turn this team around. More importantly, this team is screwed until they dump some major salary.

Wouldn't do it. Maybe look at who the three picks would have been when we got Ovi.  I bet in hindsight, keeping Ovi was the right call!

I am convinced we are going to get lucky in the Lottery.  New Jersey has gotten really lucky the last few years and them coming back to beat us the other night, got us down to #8 so we have that going for us.  Just did the draft simulator and we got the 1st pick on my fourth try.

When OV was #1, Malkin was #2. I’m happy with OV, but Malkin has had a better cast around him. That’s a management issue though.

Well, so much for hypotheticals ..... There might be a possibility that the Caps could trade down in the draft to get additional picks though.  In fact, it may be MORE likely with a lower draft pick, depending on how another team values a particular player available at #8 relative to how the Caps value players available there.

GMBM already said he "thinks we can get someone to build around at #8". Maybe it's a marketing ploy, or he really thinks that? But with our history of (lack of) development, I really hope they take BPA and hope for the best. A couple lesser "prospects" will probably get mired in Hershey and/or traded away in short order.

I agree. Keep the pick.  I am afraid they might trade up a couple slots to take the Russian - Michlov. He seems to be slipping a bit, but is unlikely to be there at the 8th pick. He might be the best talent, but I am leary of taking another Russian as our top pick.  Who knows what our relationship with Russia will be like in the next few years and it is entirely possible that Russians could be blocked from the NHL (from either side).

I can just see in now though - Michlov slips to 6 and the analysts start talking about "somebody is going to get a steal" - then GMBM trades our 8th pick and next years first rounder to move up!

The real issue for me is that he is signed to play in Russia through the 2025/2026 season.  So he won't be here for 3 years at least, and then he might need some Hershey time under any circumstances, to acclimate to the smaller rinks at least. If we can get  somebody, preferably a center, who can be here before then, I want that other player, even if his ceiling is lower.

Not to be a downer, but I just put a construction bid in to renovate the Caps locker rooms....they want to lower the ceilings in there to make the team appear better  :wackysmile:

Time to lock up this thread, which became obsolete relatively quickly?
