So on the surface, I love the resigning as does everybody else. We love Willy. When I think about it though, he will be 31 when the contract kicks in so the contract covers him from 31 to 38. With the way he plays and the health issues, this is not a smart contract. The last couple years will definitely be a problem and maybe more if he fades sooner or his knee never fully recovers. His skating definitely was not back up to 100% last year. We are already seeing what happened with Oshie and Backstrom and we are going to get stuck with $6.5 million of dead money for several years. I hate to say it, but this is a bad contract.

The term is scary given our recent track record with Oshie, Backstrom, etc. The price I think is good given the cap should go up in two years. On the whole, it's a "heart and soul" kind of contract. He's one of only a few unique forwards the combine skill and grit - you gotta pay for that. Hopefully we can add someone else to take on the "protector" role and keep him out of so many fights.

I am surprised they jumped on this contract this early. I am good with it. I was a little worried Willy would take his services elsewhere next year to be a real contender. As much hate as he has gotten over the years, I expect almost ANY team would welcome him.
This is a long contract considering his age and style of play, however I think they basically gave him one more year and spread out the funds.
Would you rather the deal be 5 years at 8m? Shorter term, but more money? The longer term helps spread the cost over more years for a team that is cash strapped now.
It's a risk either way. I'd rather have him than not. 6.5m is not too much for Tom Wilson.

These stars want term, so.. Either we pay him, or someone else will. Fighting will probably be outlawed before his new contract is half way done. Im more concerned about his knee. I think he looked back to near normal at the end of the season, but we'll know for sure this year.

Rich - I would rather pay guys what they are worth for their productive years and maybe overpay for the key guys. I hate contracts that extend an extra year or two to level out the salary cap hit, knowing that they may not even play the last year or two. We are in that situation now with Backstrom and Oshie and it is killing us. The problem is that they are stuck now and don't have the current dollars to pay Willy enough because they overpaid Carlson, Kuzy, Backstrom and Oshie.
This team has some real sole-searching to do and my hope is that they bite the bullet for a rebuild in the short term, rather than have 10 years or mediocrity. As much as I love Willy and would hate to lose him, I hate this contract.
